Year-End Fire Safety Checklist: Preparing Your Building for the New Year

As the year ends, it’s a smart time for property managers and building owners to review fire protection systems and ensure buildings are prepared for the colder months ahead. Freezing temperatures, increased heating use, and reduced occupancy during the holidays can all impact fire and life safety systems if they’re not properly maintained.

Use this year-end fire safety checklist to help start the new year confidently and compliantly.

1. Inspect Fire Sprinkler Systems

Cold weather can pose a serious risk to sprinkler systems, especially in unheated or minimally heated areas like attics and storage spaces. Verify that pipes are properly insulated, heat tracing is working, and valves are in the correct open position. Any signs of leaks or corrosion should be addressed promptly before temperatures drop further.

2. Test Fire Alarms and Monitoring

Fire alarm systems should be tested regularly, but year-end is a great reminder to confirm everything is functioning as intended. Ensure notification devices, control panels, and monitoring connections are operational so alarms can be communicated quickly in an emergency.

3. Check Fire Extinguishers

Confirm fire extinguishers are accessible and have up-to-date inspection tags. Extinguishers located in cold environments may require extra attention to ensure they’ll operate correctly when needed.

4. Review Heating Equipment and Electrical Rooms

Increased use of heating equipment during winter can elevate fire risk. Make sure mechanical and electrical rooms are clear of storage and combustible materials, and that access remains unobstructed.

5. Schedule Preventative Maintenance

If inspections or testing were deferred earlier in the year, now is the time to get them on the calendar. Preventive maintenance can help avoid costly system failures, code issues, or emergency repairs during peak winter conditions.
